Finding Your North Star

The North Star is famous for being an unwavering point in the northern sky that humans can count on to shine brightly and point the way. At one point, we literally relied on it for our lives and livelihoods. And for many people, this is true still today.

When we follow our internal compass, we’re bound for success. When we pay attention to our traditions, we find meaning in our work. When we love what we do, we create beautiful things.

This may sound like pie-in-the-sky thinking, but it rings true for InspiringApps. Like the North Star, our mission guides us to transform ideas into reality. Yes, we build web and mobile apps, but we offer something above and beyond that—inspiration.

Dan Harris: Guitar Builder & QA Analyst

As we consider the traditions that have made InspiringApps successful, we’re inspired by Dan Harris’ story. Dan is a quality assurance analyst at InspiringApps.

Find out what Dan says about his North Star:

“My name is Dan Harris. I build guitars and mandolins. I’ve been making them for 18 years now. I make them in my little shop in the back of my house. It’s my Zen when I come out here and just carve away, and I can shut out all the bad stuff in the world and shut everything else out of my mind, and just focus on that one task right in front of me.

I’ve been playing music since I was a little kid. My first memory, I was probably three or four years old, and I was sitting on my dad’s lap learning how to strum the guitar, I was a tiny boy and I've had it with me pretty much ever since.

Building guitars and making music is what I do. It's my North Star—the thing that keeps me sane. Building instruments and writing music allows me to create something beautiful out of nothing.

And it’s something that I can share with the world that wasn't there before.”

We think Dan couldn’t have said it better. Creative processes built in harmony with our personal wayfinding enable something beautiful to emerge from nothing. Respectful candor can be hard to come by, but not at InspiringApps. Living our values at work keeps us healthy and enables us to focus—to sweat the details but only the ones that matter most. Every day, we work to build apps that align with our values, that we’re proud to share with the world, to make it a little easier for people to find their way and find Zen along with it.

Working with the right people makes all the difference

Drawing Inspiration We’ve been talking about how Inspired Employees Make InspiringApps. We’ve heard from Nadia about giving back and from Dan about finding Zen. For the third installment in our series, we’re sharing some words of wisdom from InspiringApps’ Art Director, Aaron Lea. Aaron Lea: Illustrator & Art Director Aaron Lea is an art director, UX/UI designer, and illustrator. Beyond Inspiring Apps’ clients, he has produced work for Lucasfilm, the Grammy Award-winning band Ghost, Bad Robot, Paramount Pictures, Rob Zombie, Fright Rags, and Liquid Death Mountain Water. Aaron finds his inspiration steeped in pop culture, a tradition of art in his family, and a creative digital design process that enables him to put novel creations back into the world and inspire others as a result: “My name is Aaron Lea, and I’m a designer and illustrator. I’ve been doing this as long as I remember. Art has been in my family for generations. I kept going with that, continuing on that tradition that my family set forward. I draw a lot of my inspiration from pop culture, from movies, from music—I get my inspiration from everywhere. I try to take from and try to mix them together to create something very unique. I traditionally work digitally, mostly because I am such a messy artist. I’ll work in several layers until I find and just keep refining and keep refining.  I love a good idea. I love what inspires me to make something new. And that’s what I really take out of all this is that I wake up every morning, and I want to make something brand new that I didn't make the day before. We take so much. There’s so much content out there that we consume. It's really important that we put things back in. When we're gone, do we have anything left in this planet that we can look back and say, ‘Hey, this person right here made that?’ The best thing is when someone comes up to me and says that something that I created inspired them.” Inspired Employees Make InspiringApps Inspiration is what we do—after all, “Inspiring” is in our name—and our team is our not-so-secret source of inspiration that we draw from to inform our work in building beautiful apps for our clients. But inspiration is a much bigger concept. It’s what we draw from the world around us and give back as well. And because we create inspiration for others, our creativity is sustainable.
